When you open a new document in Cinema4d the whole thing is empty, very very empty.  If you want to have materials, lights and scene elements loaded at startup you have to create a “New.c4d” document containing those elements and materials in the Maxon/Cinema4d directory.  You can put whatever you want in this document and they will always be there when creating new documents.
